First, hats off to BBGUN Films for directing two spectacular music videos – they really pushed the envelope for these videos. How these explicit videos are hosted on Youtube, I have no idea? Of course we’re talking about the release of Swedish House Mafia vs Knife Party’s latest single Antidote. The Swedish House Mafia certainly have an eclectic and high quality roster of videos under their belt so far which includes their single of One, Save The World, and now the Yakuza inspired Antidote.

While we were watching both versions of the music video and pulling screencaps, I noticed the brightly colored graphics for the CLEAN version of Antidote. Just admiring the aesthetics of the neon colored words flashing, we captured for a split second of the words ‘SexyHouseMates.com’ flash across the screen. Naturally, I was curious and started to have ideas swirling around of what possibly SexyHouseMates.com could be. A new pornstar alias for the trio or adult video website? We then go on to the site prompting to enter an email address…

Now we know from The SHM has a history of having secret messaging with their announcement of their Madison Square Garden performance this past December which we heard was arguably the best performance of 2011. Now we’re curious to see what else these guys have up their sleeve. Stay tuned.

We’ve been seeing Skrillex a TON lately as he is a LA local which has contributed to such appearances at Hardwell at Playhouse, Private Events for Hyundai Re:Generation Project, and his Birthday at Brodinski & Gesaffelstein at the Key Club within the past few months.

I think it’s time for him to do some actual playing to legit and massive crowds. Personally, we’d be going to them all but there’s only so much dubstep to be heard!

French DJs Brodinski and Gesaffelstein provided a bass shaking performance this weekend at The Key club in Los Angeles. Celebrating their release joint EP ‘Bromance’ the techno juggernauts have set forth on a Bromance Tour. LA was blessed that HARD Events presented one of their tour dates so DIRTYCHOONS had a chance to see them live in action.

It’s a tad bit interesting that Europeans foreigners are such a fan of the American term ‘Bromance’ which has sort of a douchey connotation made semi-famous by MTV show ‘Bromance‘ with Brody Jenner. But ever since AVICII’s claim to fame track ‘Seeking Bromance’ made it into the EDM scene – it has kind of picked up a different vibe. Are the Europeans just making fun of us Americans or are they totally unbeknown of the word’s origin? Actually, Bromance is also a label by Brodinski and it’s totally devoted to ‘people we love.’

The Parisian duo absolutely wrecked the Key Club and it was a perfect setting as they’re use to playing in small dark clubs. Ever since Gesaffelstein’s performance (which his style can be described as  ’elegant malevolence) at HARD Summer 2011 and hearing his track VIOL, we were set on seeing him again. But we were blessed to see him paired up with Brodinski which made it even more of a treat.

Such a breath of fresh air to hear these guys throw down some serious techno in the midst and saturation of big room Swedish House Mafia style house. Check these out touring as a duo or separately if you can…

So DIRTYCHOONS had to check out one of the last shows at Avalon of 2011 and luckily for us, the line up was on point as always. Headlining the night was a LA local who established himself onto the scene as a top notch producer and DJ – Dillon Francis. Did we mention he is tied with Drop The Lime for having the most dapper hairdo? Closing the night was one of the first notable dubstep producers to make a name for himself and is associated with other UK producers such as Skream and Benga. Definitely good to see young talent combined with an OG still doin it.

Our first time checking out Dillon Francis was at his label’s (Mad Decent) block party in Downtown LA near skid row and he wrecked the indoor/outdoor warehouse space – probably the best performer there. Since then he’s put on a pretty impressive tour schedule and played a majority of Skrillex’s afterparties for the Mothership Tour in 2011.  

Check out his latest single that has a happy-go-lucky zany progression into some rough dubstep.

DIRTYCHOONS recently had the pleasure to interview with arguably one of the best producer/DJ at the moment after his performance on New Year’s Day for White Wonderland - Thomas Gold. Check out the interview below which Thomas talks about his upcoming releases in 2012, the Swedish House Mafia and his best moments in 2011!

Check out his remixes of Lady Gaga’s ‘Judas‘ or Adele’ ‘Set Fire To The Rain.‘ The German sensation does it all and is one of most humble producers out there. We’ve always said what makes a complete artist in EDM is being able to produce amazing tracks but also being able to perform a live set. Thomas Gold executes both areas like nobody’s business.

How did you get into music? What motivates you?

I hope I can play festivals such as EDC again and I’m having a big US tour this year. I will be headlining Mansion for the first time in Miami and Guvernment in Toronto which I’m excited about. But the perfect gig for me is having the crowd be really into the music. it’s not about how many people you have – whether it’s 200 or 20,000. It’s just about the vibe and being in touch with the people. Being in contact and seeing them react to the music – that’s all you need!

Trent Reznor of NIN has gained some serious success with his work co-writing the score for ‘The Social Network‘. Trent and partner/producer Atticus Ross just finished another music scoring process for the highly successful novel turned movie ‘Girl With The Dragon Tattoo‘ which is ALSO directed by David Fincher. Quite the team this trio as accomplished in their work so far. 

Trent as predicted decided to promote this film unconventionally via a series of live electronic shows across some major cities such as Stockholm, Chicago, New York and Los Angeles. He reached out to Gary Richards of HARDFEST to help execute these free shows (if you RSVP) to help promote the movie release. In all honesty, there was pretty much no information about the HARD x Mouth Taped Shut and why it relates to the film. I mean, the movie is probably pretty damn good considering it’s based on a highly popular Swedish crime novel and seriously what out of Sweden is NOT good these days – Swedish House Mafia at Madison Square Garden, anyone? DIRTYCHOONS is about to import some Swedish tap water to the states pretty soon.

Anyways, the bill for this show was pretty stacked and we personally believe what Trent decided to do was unusually awesome – certainly generated a buzz. They could have wasted boatloads of money on some lame Hollywood parties for industry folk but they decided to provide free entertainment to anyone who was interested.

Reznor figures the event’s a success. ”The end result is an event that anyone attending leaves and goes, ‘Wow, that was great. Oh, and it was free. Fuck, it was pretty cool,’” Reznor says. “That’s my only agenda here.”

Tickets, despite being free, were pretty hard to come by because after the limited tickets were gone through RSVP, one would have to go to the venue on a Friday afternoon to pick up the tickets. However, I think the ones that went through that process were glad they did…

There’s no doubt in denying how big dance music has gotten within the last couple of years. As the dance music scene grows bigger and bigger, so does the influx of fresh talented producers and DJs. While household names such as Tiesto, Armin van Buuren, Above & Beyond, will always have legendary status in the dance community, they also represent the “old” guard. There is a new generation of producers and DJs emerging, a generation that looked up to these dance music pioneers and are now eager to make their own impact on the scene. 

Porter Robinson and Mat Zo are at the forefront of this new generation of artists, they also happen to be two of the youngest. Porter Robinson at 19 and Mat Zo at 21, have made big names from themselves and they know how to deliver when it comes to live gigs. This past Saturday, December 3 at the Music Box was no exception.

Mat Zo was the opener for Porter and his set definitely set the tone for the rest of the night. Mainly known for his trance and work under the Anjunabeats label, Mat Zo did not restrict himself to his trance work but instead mixed in a healthy dose of house for his set. But not to take anything away from Mat Zo, it was Porter Robinson that most of the crowd came to see and it was Porter that stole the show. Porter’s first 10 minutes included Wolfgang Gartner’s Space Junk, Animal Rights, Tiesto’s Maximal Crazy, Michael Woods’ VMS, and Alvin Risk’s remix of Kill The Noise.

His set was foreshadowing of the type of set Porter had in store for the rest of the night. It was unpredictable, beautifully blended with a variety of genres, and nonstop energy. Whether it was Porter’s own work such as The Seconds and Unison, an updated version of Daft Punk’s legendary house track One More Time by Mike Candys and Jack Holiday, Avicii’s Le7els, or even Mat Zo’s very own Rebound, Porter mixed it all up. This is a true testament to his understanding of the EDM scene and why he is one of its brightest up and coming stars. His young age brings about an unparalleled energy to his performance and also an understanding of what the crowd wants out of a set. If you couldn’t find one part of his performance that got your blood flowing and feet moving, then you are truly not a fan of EDM.

I fully expect Porter to continue to branch out, mix and experiment with sounds that will further separate his sound and style from the rest of the DJs out there. Expect Porter Robinson to have an even bigger year in 2012 and for his hits to circulate the airwaves. Music prodigies like Porter will make EDM fans out of all of us.

Last week Hyundai hosted a mega series of events to promote the launch of their new vehicle The Veloster. The Remix Labs are hosted in all the major cities across the US and DIRTYCHOONS was invited to check out a special preview of the documentary hosted by KCRW’s Jason Bentley that was produced in conjunction withHyundai & The Grammy Association called RE:GENERATION.

Follow DJ Premier, Mark Ronson, Skrillex, Pretty Lights and The Crystal Method as they remix, recreate and re-imagine five traditional styles of music. From the classical perfection of the Berklee Symphony Orchestra to the bayou jams of New Orleans jazz, our five distinctive DJs collaborate with some of today’s biggest musicians to discover how our musical past is influencing the future.

There are some pretty eclectic collaborations - esp. with Skrillex working with The Doors to create ‘Breakn a Sweat’. Documentary will be in select theatres starting Feb. 16, 2012.

At the event, all performers sans Pretty Lights were suppose to perform 15 minute sets but Skrillex gave everyone a treat by playing for 1+ hours. Not a bad way to spend a Wednesday…

This remix that he dropped that night is starting to grow on me – didn’t think someone could make this track better…

Another epic and sold out performance produced by Insomniac this past Saturday[12.10.11] by bringing in Swedish talent Sebastian Ingrosso and Alesso. DIRTYCHOONS recently checked out the performance from Swedish House Mafia’s other counterpart, Axwell, on Thanksgiving weekend which was another sold out date.

But do you know what really disappointing from the show? I kept hearing the same thing from everyone which was “why did Alesso have such a short set?” Since his mega smash remix if Nadia Ali, Starkillers and Alex Kenji’s ‘Pressure’ that launched Alesso on to the scene last year during EDC, he has since produced one of the arguably’s biggest track of the year – ‘Calling‘ w/  Refune Records label owner – Sebastian Ingrosso.  

Just right when you might have been overloaded with that track all summer – Alesso drops a seriously sinister choon that nobody is going to top anytime soon. Sit back and wish you heard this on bass pounding speakers.

ALESSO – RAISE YOUR HEAD

This was the first time we’ve seen Alesso perform since his short set at EDC and this dude is on FIRE. He had the crowd at The Palladium going off and it was such a tease to see him only perform for one hour! 

He dropped an unreleased gem by AVICII & Nicky Romero – ID (Fuck School) that we have yet to hear any DJ play. Expect this track to be in heavy rotation along with Alesso’s ‘Raise Your Head’ at New Year’s Eve clubs across the world.
